Peacock Blue

Peacock Blue or Peacock of India, which is the scientific name Pavo cristatus is one of three species of bird peacock. Blue peacock feather has a shiny dark blue. Large adult male birds, to a length of 230cm, with a very long tail cover metallic green. At the top of his head erect-crested blue are formed fan. Females are smaller than males. The feathers are not shiny, greenish brown with black stripes and without decorated fur tail cover. Young birds like females.

Blue Peacock population scattered in open forests with grasslands in India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bhutan. Previous species are found also in Bangladesh, but now likely extinct there.

The male peacock is polygamous species, having more than one spouse. In the breeding season, males show off their tail feathers in front of a female bird. The feathers of the tail cover is opened to form a fan-shaped eyes with blue spots. Females usually incubate three to six eggs.




Blue Peacock bird feed comprised of various grains, grass shoots and leaves, various insects, as well as various types of small animals such as worms, spiders and small lizards.

Blue peacock is the national bird of India. This species also play an important role in the mythology of Buddhist, Hindu and other cultures.

Peacock Blue evaluated as low risk on the IUCN Red List.
